Nurturing Nature in Ross
Ross Nature Recovery Group
Help us transform Ross and its surroundings by planting and restoring hedges and trees, creating a thriving environment for wildlife and the community.
Our Mission
We are a new group seeking to enhance the environment in Ross and its surrounding areas through the planting and/or restoration of hedges and trees. We are working with Ross CDT to attract volunteers for the initial planting and will also invite those living closest to our plantings to get involved in the care of the young plants during their first few years as they get established
Within the town we have identified at least 46 sites where work by volunteers could benefit the town, its community, and wildlife by planting a mix of hedging and woodland species and allowing them to develop naturally with only minimal pruning. In some areas trees would be planted within this hedge. This will help to increase the benefits to wildlife and create another point of interest to the community.
For example, a community orchard could be planted and other trees planted on one site. Elsewhere, existing hedges could be expanded in length and width to create a better habitat and reinforce wildlife corridors. Every site would benefit in the long term from more trees, more nature and more shade.
Along a treeless length of the River Wye there is the opportunity for planting with groupings of native woodland shrubs and trees, connecting existing natural riparian vegetation across treeless agricultural land and with the riparian corridor going through the town itself. Eventually this will help to create shade and habitat and stabilise the bank.
Our Planting Locations
Discover Our Sites
We have identified 46 sites across Ross where planting and restoration efforts will take place. These sites have been chosen for their potential to enhance local biodiversity and provide green spaces for the community. Each location offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the environment, from expanding existing hedges to creating new woodland areas. Our efforts will focus on planting a mix of native species that will thrive in the local ecosystem, ensuring long-term sustainability and ecological benefits.
Key sites include the community orchard area, where fruit trees will be planted, and several urban locations where hedges will be expanded to form wildlife corridors. These projects aim to create more natural habitats, increase shade, and improve the overall aesthetic of the town.
